Monty Lokesh Kataria from UrbanAsian.com talks with Panjabi MC on other DJ's playing his song in the club, Bhangra in New York, Bollywood, the making of the Mundian To Bach Ke video, family and explains why Panjabi MC is spelt with an ‘A’ not a ‘U’ and more
Pretty much everything that Panjabi MC does now is not underground anymore, it is all up in the air, all over, Do you miss that feeling of being underground?
No, I keep it underground defiantly, there is no promo of any of my stuff, the videos are only done because the record company in india or someone like that might say “we have to have a video”, so I go and do a video "but do I have to be in it?" and then they say "you have to be in the video" and I say "what am I going to do in the video?". They say “Just move your hands around" so I just go and do that. But to me it doesn’t make sense, music to me is something that keeps me sane, keeps me busy, like a hobby; I never really wanted anything more than that from it.
Panjabi MC, Why p.A.n not p.U.n?
For a number of reason, one is that I’ve got family from Afghanistan. In Afghanistan I would say it (Punjab) is called Panjab with an ‘A’, and the capital city of that state is Panjab with an ‘A’. That was from my mother’s side of the family, which is why I named it Panjabi MC. Other producers out there that have also done that, have basically rip me off, they don’t even know why there doing it, but it’s all good. – Panjabi MC

"Exactly 15 years ago came out a song that surprised both the Indian and the Hip Hop community and still provides a great atmosphere at any party. Punjabi music mixed with fat hip hop beats. Rajinder Rai, aka Panjabi MC then made with the song "Mundian to bach ke" the breakthrough and is since then a pioneer of Bhangra-hip-hop, a blend of Indian music and hip hop. Long as one has heard from him no more. Currently is working on his new album "56 District" and mixed today with the carnival. And we have of course invited him to us directly!" - funkhauseuropa.de

"I would put a Panjabi MC soundtrack on there, some hardcore beats, some nice Tablas because we got to see some wildlife in the film Meerkats running around a island we didn’t even no existed and stuff like that. But at the same time we needed some beats up in the place to keep people awake" - Panjabi MC
